The Treasure Village Montessori (TVM) school grew off of the foundations of Montessori Island School, a private Montessori elementary program established in 1996. This program based its curriculum on the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori, as does the current charter program. In 1998, a group of parents and community members organized and wrote a charter that would enable residents of the Upper Keys the ability to attend an elementary Montessori school free from tuition and transportation constraints. We offer available testing services, free and reduced lunch, and other resources available to the Upper Keys residents through the public school system, yet in a private school setting. TVM has grown over the last four years to an original enrollment of 60 and a teaching staff of 4, to its current enrollment of 150 and a teaching staff of 17. TVM started out as a Kindergarten to third grade program that has since added fourth through sixth grade, with hopes of eventually growing to eighth grade. TVM has been under the direction of Kelly Astin throughout the entire growth of the school, as has Bridget Dangel, (lead Montessori Teacher). The TVM staff, the TVM Board, the Monroe County School Board, parents, students, and the community have contributed to providing and building a program that specializes in the Montessori approach to learning, while successfully integrating the Sunshine State Standards. The last five years have been tremendously successful academically (as tests scores have shown), but more importantly - our parents have said the student’s have succeeded in other schools as they have out-grown our program. |
